Lifting weights has shown to be more effective at burning bodyfat than cardio exercise! An analysis of 114 studies with over 4000 subjects indicated that supervised resistance training along with calorie restriction is more effective at burning fat than cardiovascular exercise combined with calorie restriction. Over a 12-26 week period the weightlifters lost on average 11# of bodyfat which was 3# more than the cardio exercise subjects. Furthermore, the weightlifting group demonstrated reduced effects from Type II diabetes and cancer treatments while also maintaining or increasing lean body mass.
Of course, the benefits of cardiovascular exercise has been well documented including lowering resting heart rate, increasing pulmonary efficiency, and providing greater endurance for recreational sports and activities.
What does this all mean? It means find a healthy balance between supervised resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, and healthy eating to most effectively lose bodyfat.
